Mao Zedong, China’s Communist Legend and his mausoleum

Mao Zedong is a legend of China. Mao is a great leader, the founding father of China. Mao Zedong is also a controversial figure who brought China into a communist country and became an important figure in China’s milestone. Mao Zedong died in 1976, 27 years after he proclaimed the People’s Republic of China on October 1, 1949. Not just the name of Mao Zedong is remembered, but also his body. Mao’s body was still intact and anyone can see it.

Mao Zedong’s body was preserved and stored in a glass coffin in a mausoleum of Mao Zedong in the south of Tiananmen Square, exactly behind the People’s Heroes Monument. Tourist who visited Tiananmen Square would easily see the building of the mausoleum which was brownish. Inside the building, tourist can find a glass coffin containing Mao’s body, shrouded with a China’s red flag which covered half of coffin. Tourists can see clearly Mao Zedong’s face from the side.

Mao Zedong’s mausoleum building was inaugurated on September 9, 1977, exactly one year after communist party leader had died. Mao Zedong’s mausoleum building is divided into three parts. The northern part is an entrance room that can accommodate 600 people at once, in middle part is a hall of honor, where Mao Zedong’s body be buried, while the southern building is a path out of the mausoleum. On side wall in southern part of mausoleum, tourist can read a Mao Zedong’s poem with Chinese characters.

Tourist can visit to Mao’s mausoleum to see t Mao Zedong’s body without entrance charge. Mausoleum of Mao Zedong’s only open for three hours, starting at 09:00 until 12:00. Every Monday, mausoleum of Mao Zedong is closed.

Every tourist who enters is checked very carefully. Tourists are not allowed to bring bags, cameras, food and drink, let alone take a video image recorder. All forbidden items can be deposited at deposit box which is located quite far from mausoleum location, outside of east Tiananmen Square.

Tourists are also forbidden to stop while in the left side of the body of Mao Zedong. The convoy should continue walking so that congestion does not occur because the queue of tourists every day is always reaching up to two kilometers in Tiananmen Square.

For tourists who want to give special tribute can buy flowers at a kiosk located at entrance of the mausoleum of Mao Zedong. At the back door, tourists can buy souvenirs typical of China, such as key chains, T-shirts, pins, bags, and stamps of China’s former leader, Mao Zedong.
